John Michael Coppe's Obituary
John Michael Coppe died on August 30, 2018 in Annapolis, Maryland after a 20 year heroic battle with addiction that he could not beat in the end. At the time he was living in a home for people in recovery from drug addiction.
He leaves his mother Margaret E. Coppe of Lexington, MA, his father Michael R. Coppe and his wife Jenevy Dames Coppe of Lexington and Cotuit, MA, his sister Elizabeth Anne Maier and her husband James Maier of Chester, MD, his sister Carolyn Coppe Peacock and her husband Zachary Peacock of Lexington, MA, his beloved grandfather Benjamin A. Nicks of Shawnee, KS, his favorite nephews Benjamin and Alex Maier and Gregory and Trent Peacock, and step-siblings Tatum Thompson and Jamon Darling. He also leaves several aunts and uncles and many cousins who loved him and supported him in his efforts to stay sober.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother June T. Nicks of Shawnee, KS, his paternal grandparents Michael J. Coppe of New Britain, CT and Cotuit, MA and Antoinette R. Coppe of New Britain, CT. His older sister Carolyn, had the luxury of sharing her birthday with him.
John was born in Boston, MA on February 16, 1982 and raised in Lexington, MA and summered in Cotuit, MA. From his teen years, he struggled with substance abuse disorder and tried to conquer addiction by participating in many recovery programs in Massachusetts and beyond and most recently in Annapolis, where he had a loving and extensive network of people who worked tirelessly and supportively to help him in his recovery.
During his formative years, John’s infectious smile and adorable personality captured the love and support of his family and friends in both Lexington and Cotuit. In Cotuit, he was particularly close to his Grandpa Mickey, who loved and cared for him during John’s wonderful summers there. John loved sailing and boating spending many warm days messing about in Cotuit’s waters. When he moved to Maryland, John took advantage of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay as often as he could.
At the age of 16 John worked in paving becoming a surrogate son and great friend of his employer, Bobby Kaminski, who also mentored and supported him. Most recently, John continued in his trade with Dustin’s Driveways of MD where he worked hard in sales and driveway paving and installations. The owner, Dustin and his wife Stephanie were supportive and caring friends of John during his time spent in Maryland.
Wherever he lived, John had many friends who cared about him and only and always wished him the absolute best in his struggles with his addiction. He was a caring, kind, and supportive friend to many. He had a heart that would never give up on you. John, like all the others suffering from this disease, was so much more than his addiction.
A remembrance service will be held in Annapolis, MD on Saturday, September 8th at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Rd, from 2-4pm. Please bring memories and stories to share.
