John and Elizabeth Alexander's Obituary
Elizabeth B. Alexander, best known as Betty, and John C. Alexander, remembered as John (Jerry by close family), celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past May 7,2014. Betty passed away peacefully on July 2, 2014 and John, her faithful and loving husband, closely followed, passing away on July 8, 2014. Betty was born on April 8, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Leonard Neale Burroughs and Nettie Lee Burroughs. John was born on August 12, 1926 in the District of Columbia, the son of Frances deSales Alexander and Anne Skinker Alexander. Both Betty and John resided in Annapolis, Maryland for 14 years. They spent their summers in Fenwick Island, Delaware for forty years, leaving behind many faithful friends and wonderful memories.
Betty is survived by her sister, Connie Swanson. John was predeceased by his older brother, Frances D. Alexander and is survived by his younger brother, Dr. James S. Alexander. Betty and John are survived by their daughter, Carolyn A. Wheale and husband Duncan, and their son, John N. Alexander (Jack) and wife Lynn. Carolyn and Jack were both with their parents caring for them these past several months. Betty and John have four grandchildren, Katie Nester, Bradley Alexander, Patrick Wheale, and Ryan Wheale, and four great grandchildren, Devin, Emma, Aubrie, and Gage, all who love them and referred to Betty as “Boop” as in Betty Boop, and referred to John as their “Great” granddad.
Betty and John most enjoyed being with family and friends, sharing late afternoon social hour on their back porch at the beach. They each had a real heart for the younger generation in their lives; Betty will always be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor, John for his passionate support of the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Orioles. Both Betty and John were raised in the Roman Catholic Church; Betty attended Seton (Catholic) High school as a young girl. She worked as a legal secretary and executive secretary to the director of the EPA for many years. John completed courses of the American Institute of Banking. He began his career as a senior clerk, Riggs National Bank, went on to be a bank examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency-US Treasury, was elected as Executive Vice President of American National Bank of Maryland, and retired as Senior Vice President of First National Bank of Baltimore, in charge of the Loan Review Division.
Betty was a proud member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy. She served as a volunteer at Hospice of the Chesapeake. As hobbies, Betty enjoyed reading knitting, and cross-stitch, and she loved dancing to big band music. John loved the game of golf and riding his bike the length of Fenwick Island. Both Betty and John enjoyed traveling with friends and have done so extensively, visiting countries in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and many tropical Islands, making new friends along the way. The will be missed and remembered with smiles and love by all.
There will be a visitation and memorial service for Betty and John on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. In lieu of plants or flowers, please honor them with a donation to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
