Joan Dobson Whiteley's Obituary
Joan Dobson Whiteley passed away on January 11, 2023 just two days shy of what would have been her 83rd birthday.
Joanie was born on January 13, 1940 to the late Scott Dobson and Estelle Dobson Carroll.
After graduating from Annapolis High School, Joanie went on to study French at the University of North Carolina.
Joanie met the love of her life, Gus Whiteley. They raised three boys together on the Severn River.
In her later years, she worked at Tilghman Company jewelry store downtown Annapolis. She loved her job as an engraver there.
Everyone who knew Joanie knew she loved flowers and gardening. She was an active member of the Severn River Garden Club, which was founded by her mother Estelle. For many years, she attended the annual Daffodil Festival in Gloucester, Virginia. Another one of her hobbies included playing mahjong with friends. She also enjoyed serving the community through charities such as Meals on Wheels. Joanie was very active in the Asbury United Methodist Church, and was a true follower of the Lord.
Along with her parents, Joanie is predeceased by her late husband Gustave Theodore Dalcour Whiteley and her brother Franklin Scott Dobson.
She is survived by her three sons Scotty, Tommy, and Andy, her granddaughters Ashley Estelle Whiteley and Alexandra Avery Whiteley, and her great grandson Thomas J. Castro, all of Annapolis.
A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church: 78 Church Rd, Arnold, MD 21012 on Saturday, January 21st at 11:00. A reception will follow at Severn Crest (directions to be provided at the church). In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
