Joan "Joni" M. Crestwell's Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and abiding love that we announce the passing of Joan “Joni” Marie Richman Crestwell, who died peacefully on June 3, 2025, after a courageous two-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Joni lived life fully. She earned both her bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s in criminal justice from Northern Arizona University; then devoted her entire 26-year career to public service, working for the US Census Bureau as a Survey Statistician. Over the years, she served the department in multiple capacities, contributing her expertise and dedication to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of critical data that shapes our nation.
Throughout her life, Joni was a passionate advocate for women’s rights, antiracism, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. She stood firmly for what she believed in, always leading with compassion and courage.
Joni’s spirit was unmistakable—bubbly, bold, and full of life. She had a laugh that could light up a room and a presence that made others feel seen and heard. A creative soul, she loved crafting, shopping, biking, and designing beautiful things. She was an avid lover of music and musicals, a dedicated TV watcher, and an adventurous traveler. She brought style, color, and joy wherever she went.
Joni was the beloved wife of Rev. John T. Crestwell Jr., her partner in love and life for 16 years. She was his rock, his cheerleader, his best friend, and his grounding force. Their bond was deep and enduring—rooted in laughter, honesty, and unwavering support.
She is survived by her children, Parker Thomson and Makenzie Thomson; stepchildren, JT Crestwell, Kennedy Crestwell, and Zephyr Crestwell; her father, Bill Richman, and stepmother, Marlis Richman; her sister, Rochelle Richman; and her brother, Mike Richman. She was cherished by her extended family and many dear friends who walked alongside her through life and through her illness.
Even as cancer advanced, Joni remained fiercely herself—funny, present, and full of love. She taught all who knew her what it means to live with grace, grit, and humor in the face of adversity.
A celebration of Joni’s life will be held on Saturday, August 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 333 Dubois Road, Arnold, MD. The service will be filled with music, joy, and heartfelt remembrance—just as Joni would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 333 Dubois Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.
Joni will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her radiant spirit, her loving heart, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
