Janice P. Hansman's Obituary
Janice P. Hansman, lovingly known as “Jan,” passed away on May 8, 2026, at Anne Arundel Medical Center of a stroke. She had been a resident of Arnold, Maryland, for nearly 36 years.
Jan was born on August 4, 1953, at the former Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C., and was a proud fifth-generation Washingtonian. She was the third of five daughters born to Charles L. and Evelyn G. Pyle, who predeceased her.
As a teenager, she competed on her local swim team. She was a fan of pop music of the era, and especially liked Hermans Hermits. Jan graduated from Parkdale High School in Riverdale Park, Maryland, in 1971 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland as part of the Class of 1975. While attending college she met the love of her life, Stephen Hansman. The two were married on June 5, 1976, in the university’s Memorial Chapel.
Jan worked for the American Trucking Association before dedicating herself full-time to her family following the birth of her daughter, Kimberly, in October 1981. During Steve’s service in the United States Air Force, the family was stationed in Maryland, Florida, and South Carolina. They returned to Maryland and eventually made their home in Arnold. Jan rejoined the workforce for several years as a Retail Merchandiser for Hallmark Greeting Cards and retired in 2012.
She loved bowling and won several awards while competing in local leagues. Jan was a devoted fan of Washington football and baseball, faithfully supporting the Washington Commanders and Washington Nationals through the years. She was also gracious enough when her in-laws and friends would cheer for the Ravens and Orioles. Jan loved beach vacations, especially trips to the Outer Banks and the Caribbean, where she could relax in the sun, work on her tan and enjoy happy hour umbrella drinks with family and friends.
Above all else, Jan treasured her family and was proud to be “Grandmom.” She delighted in hosting holiday dinners, cookouts, and birthday celebrations, always making sure everyone felt welcomed, well fed, and loved.
In addition to her husband, Steve, Jan is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Ermer and her husband, Jacob, of Riva, Maryland; her beloved grandchildren, Preston and Elizabeth; her sisters, Nancy Minter (Lyle) of Fairfax, Virginia, Marilyn Pfeifer (Richard) of Wiley Ford, West Virginia, and Barbara Bolvin (David) of Olney, Maryland; as well as 10 nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister Carol Fohner.
A celebration of life and luncheon will be held for family and close friends on May 30, 2026 at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD.
