Jackson Merrill Hoffman Sr.'s Obituary
Jackson Merrill Hoffman, Sr. was born on June 22, 1934 to the late Arthur and Doris (Hyle) Hoffman in Somerville, NJ and moved to Quincy, MA at the age of 4.
He joined the Army on January 25, 1954 and served 3 years of active duty; he graduated jump school in 1954, served in headquarters company, served in an Intelligence Reconnaissance platoon in the 505 infantry division at Ft. Bragg, NC. He then joined the reserves program and worked for Bethlehem Steel as a pipefitter/steamfitter. While in the reserves he took special courses in logistics and then joined the 11th Special Forces group. While working at Bethlehem Steel, he was transferred to the USS Long Beach and USS Bainbridge where he worked as a nuclear powered pipefitter. Later he worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, NH and worked on the USS John Adams before being transferred to the US Naval Academy in 1964 where he retired after 31 years as a stationary engineer in HVAC. Upon retiring from the US Naval Academy he was employed by Anne Arundel County in the Utilities Water Department for 10 years.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Past Commander of the Kent Narrows Sail & Power Squadron, Past Commodore of the Admirals Annapolis Yacht Club, member of the Annapolis Elks, a Mason in Centreville Lodge, Chester River Shriners, Scottish Rites, American Legion and Moose. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, gardening, skiing, and boating.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Hoffman; 5 children: Jackson Hoffman, Jr., of Clayton, NC, Leighann Sudhoff of Chester, MD, Scott Hoffman of Sneads Ferry, NC, Suzann Aaron of Savannah, GA, David Hoffman of VA; 2 step children: Garett Overstreet of Encinitas, CA, Valerie Barnes of Annapolis; a brother, John Townley Sinclair of Clinton, NC; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
A visitation will be held on Thursday September 5, 2013 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Rd. Annapolis, MD 21401 from 5-8pm and Friday September 6, 2013 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd. Annapolis, MD 21401 at 1pm until a service begins at 2pm. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
