Helen, Charlie and their family lived across the street on Ben Oaks Dr East. Helen’s family of 7 children and ours of 6 often blended in adventure. We would listen to Gretchen play piano, watch her care for small animals, and make jewelry. We often played dress up with Betsy, watched the boys clean fish and eat tomato sandwiches on the homemade bread that Helen always had baking. Helen taught me to knit and this year, I in turn taught my 7 y/o granddaughter the same stitches. As the weather begins to cool into fall, I will remember the wonderful popcorn balls and the years of fun we were blessed to share with Helen’s family!
