Grover Kermit Chambers' Obituary
Grover Kermit Chambers, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, age 72, passed peacefully from this life into eternal rest at his home in Annapolis, Maryland on April 28, 2023.
Born on January 20, 1951, to James “JC” Chambers and Peggy Dowell Chambers in Annapolis, Maryland, Grover attended Anne Arundel County public schools, graduated from Annapolis Senior High School, and attended Morgan State University. Grover’s professional career included working for Earl’s Moving and Storage Company, The American Pest Control Company, and the City of Annapolis’ Housing Authority.
Grover enjoyed many interests and hobbies over the years to include baseball (he was an avid baseball cap collector), music (he sang, served as song leader at church, played the saxophone, and the drums marching with The Marylandettes Drum and Bugle Corps and The Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps), bowling (something he enjoyed doing with his wife Leslie and his sisters Pat and DeMorris), football (he was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan), Lacrosse (he played some in high school and some in college), and in his later years of life he took up playing golf which became his passion as he frequented the courses several times a week honing his skills, and playing competitively sometimes against his son in law, Jonathan.
A very active and loyal member of the Capital Church of Christ, Grover’s service to his church community included working as the Building and Grounds Caretaker alongside his devoted friend, Cornell Cooper, driving the church bus to transport members to and from services on Sunday mornings, Sunday afternoons, and Wednesday evenings, and volunteering to transport members to run various errands or attend medical appointments.
Grover comes from a very large family and generations of legacy in the Annapolis area. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Frances Dowell, his uncle, Johnny Dowell, his parents James and Peggy Chambers, his brothers Bruce Chambers and Angelo “Gung-Gung” Chambers, and his sister Pat Chambers.
Grover leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 30 years, Leslie E. Chambers, his daughter, Tameika L. Chambers- Pope (Jonathan), his son, Grover K. Chambers II, his son by marriage, Ray E. Harrod, his granddaughters, Chandler Ivory Pope and London Ashleigh Pope, his grandchildren by marriage, Sharay R. Harrod, Ray E. Harrod Jr., Kanye R. Harrod, and De’Syre Brashears, his siblings, Eraina J. Smallwood, DeMorris D. Palmer, LaGrant Chambers (Betty), Angela Chambers- James, Cecelia A. Chambers, Thurston Brooks (Karen), and Serene V. Perrin (Alfred), his mother in law, Loretta Harrod, his sisters in law, Darlene Brashears and Penelope Harrod, mother of his children and friend, Joan Brandford, his best friend, Cornell Cooper, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Always jovial, full of humor and light-hearted fun, and a master at the “gift of gab,” Grover was known and loved by many. His spirit will continue to live within us all as we forever remember to honor his value and contributions to our lives.
In Loving Words from Leslie…” I loved you then, I love you now, I will love you forever.”
