Gordon Johnson's Obituary
On Sunday, December 21, 2014, Gordon Gilbert Johnson, departed this earthly life to begin his heavenly Journey.
Gordon was born, one of four children, on April 28, 1950, to the late William Henry Johnson and Madeline McCray Johnson. Gordon’s early education began by attending Germantown Elementary School and Trinity Annex Junior High School. Later he attended Annapolis Senior High School where he was a member of the graduating class of 1968. After graduating from high school, he continued his education by enrolling at Bowie State College as an art major. In his early years before college, Gordon worked in various restaurants in Annapolis. While at college, he became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Phi Epsilon Sigma Charter. He also became known as the campus barber, and because of his skills as a barber, he later worked as an apprentice under the guidance of the late Mr. Roger Williams, in the historic downtown Annapolis district. After graduating from Bowie, he worked as a sketch artist for WBAL-TV, the U.S. Postal Service, Baltimore Gas and Electric (21 yrs.), the Cheltenham Boys Village Correctional Facility (12 yrs.), and also started his own home improvement business, “SIBPOP” (Sword In Brush Paint On Pallett). He was blessed with the gift to create beautiful art work and elegant carpentry.
Gordon met the Love of his life, his “sweetie,” Carol or as he called her (Marjorie) Lynn Belt, as youngsters. Lynnie’s first impression of him was to avoid him like the plague! However, Gordon was determined that she would be the one he would marry. Magically during one summer break from college, they met again and the sparks began to fly. On Oct. 16, 1971, they were united in marriage. From this union they were blessed with one daughter, Corie Danielle Johnson, whom he loved and adored and affectionately called “Buzzy”.
Gordon was never a stranger to anyone and those who knew him recognized how very much he enjoyed his family, ministering the gospel, his artwork, and let us not forget how much he enjoyed his mama’s “fried chicken”, and his overall love for food. He was also a big fan of James Brown and used to love to “cut a rug”; and how could we ever forget his comedic edge and “CRAZY” laugh!
Gordon was a former member of Asbury United Methodist Church and served on the Sr. Men’s Choir. In 1981 he became a member of the International House of Prayer for all People Church, in Harwood, Md., where he was ordained a Minister. He traveled home and abroad preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ: New York, Chicago, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Africa, India, Trinidad, just to name a few.
Throughout his illness, Gordon still remained faithful in the Gospel and always kept a joyful sense of humor. He leaves to cherish his memories a very devoted and loving wife, Carol “Lynnie” Johnson, one daughter Corie Danielle Johnson, one very dedicated brother, William “Larry” Johnson (Debbie), two sisters, Madeline Postella Holland and Shelia (Oueen Ramkissoon) Johnson, three grandchildren, Leslie John Offer Jr., Omar Justin Offer, and Christian Ariel Bryant. A loving Mother and Father-in-law, Lillian and George Belt, a devoted brother-in-law and friend George “Lassie” Belt (Charlene), eight additional brother and sisters-in-law and a host of loving relatives and close friends.
