Firstly I must extend our heartfelt condolences to you Sally, and to your family. The news shocked me, but I did know that Gary was ill when I reached out to him, out of the blue, to see what he was up to...I sent a note to catch up with him to his office, never knowing if he received it or not.
Gary was one of my dearest friends when we both lived in the wilds on central British Columbia, I was working there as a plastic surgeon, and he was a family doctor in Mackenzie. He would often drive down on weekends to visit, oftentimes hobnobbing with the other Afrikaaners we were so fortunate to have working in Prince George. My wife Kathy and I were close friends of Gary's, in fact I had the great good fortune of having him over to our place to watch the Toronto Blue Jays capture a world title!! and I can attest to his devotion to that team....often, we also would enjoy turning up the stereo with U2 playing, getting us ready for a night out. He was a delight to be around, ready with a laugh and quick wit, and always up for a challenge, like when he'd successfully fit his tall frame into my smaller sports car.
One memory that is seared in the minds of all of us who witnessed it is when Gary, priding himself as a decent rugby player, decided he'd throw a block at an oversized ram (i.e. sheep) who we were all trying to corner as it needed major shearing....there it was running towards us, and there he was, bracing himself as he threw himself onto the ram's side to get it to swerve into a pen.
And there we were, all bent over laughing as the 6 foot something skilled rugbyite was seen flying in the air, in the opposite directlon as to where he'd come from. Needless to say, the sheep never did get a hair cut.
I know we are all poorer having lost such an absorbing, respected, skilled friend and colleague. He will be in our thoughts and prayers. We send you all a virtual hug. May Gary rest in peace.

Shocked to hear about Gary's death. I trained and served with Gary in SA Special Forces in the mid 1980's. Gary was an exceptional soldier, doctor and friend. RIP my dear friend Gary Dix.
Dr. Dix was a great doctor and very sympathetic . I had scoliosis surgery and ended up with spinal infection. He came into my hospital room one and told me he was praying for me, Dr. Dix you are my hero you saved my life.
Thankful for this human early in his career in small town Alberta Canada. He taught a young nurse some things I will never forget. We were in a theatrical play together and he had an amazing sense of humor. I was looking for him and hoping to catch up with him when I came across the caring bridge site and his information which was so sad. He and his brother David were a real asset to our community so many years ago. So sorry to hear of his struggles and passing. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. The world lost an amazing doctor. I have fond memories working night shift and some of the crazy we had to look after is burned into my memories. Thank you Gary Dix for your knowledge and support way back 30 some years ago. May God's love surround family at this difficult time. From Two Hills Alberta Canada... Sending love and prayers.
