Florence Rosetta Stanchel's Obituary
Mrs. Florence Stanchel was called to rest and departed this life on September 15, 2018. She was the youngest of five children born to the late James Louis and Lottie Pough in Philadelphia, PA. Florence was preceded in death by her siblings: Karine West, Louis Pough, Haywood Pough, and James Pough Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Pough moved their family to Washington, DC while the children were very young. Florence attended and graduated from Dunbar High School. She entered the working world and worked at Georgetown University. Later she met a U.S. Army Soldier, Sgt. Samuel C. Curtis, married and traveled to various countries and military bases. Florence was a loving, devoted and attentive mother to her only child, Derwood. Upon the passing of Samuel, Florence moved to Chicago, Illinois to start the next phase of her life. She worked numerous jobs in retail and logistics. She then married Wallace Stanchel, another former Soldier and lived there for the next 15 years. She returned home to Washington, DC to assist in caring for her mother and be with the rest of her family. Her last residence was at the Genesis Nursing Care Facility in Severna Park MD, where she made many friends, inspired those around her and was a spark of life to all.
Florence was very active in the Church. She attended the family church, Turner Memorial AME in Washington DC, followed by Third Baptist Church of Chicago and ended at the St. James Church in Havre de Grace, Maryland. She was very active and enjoyed singing in many choirs, being a soloist whenever asked and helping others.
She leaves to mourn: one son: Derwood, one Daughter-in-law Towanda, four grandchildren, Marcus, Bianca, Crystal and Peri, and four great grandchildren, Lucas, Liam, Travis and Sydney, a granddaughter-in-law, Danielle and a grandson-in-law, Joseph, close family friends, and various nieces and nephews: Brenda Butler, Gail Alston, Kim Pough, Deborah Evans, Regina Durate, Shelia Conley, Monica Boyd, Louis Pough Jr. and Donald and Regina Johnson.
