Evelyn R. Johnson's Obituary
On July 2, 2024, Evelyn Raphaella Jones Johnson was called home to be with God. Evelyn was born on August 2, 1941 to Gomalie Jones, Sr. and Raphaella Hawkins. She was the second eldest of nine siblings. Evelyn is predeceased in death by her four siblings Agnes, John, Joseph, and Varona.
Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland. Her high school education began at St. Mary’s Catholic High School and was completed at Bates High School in 1961. After graduating from high school she worked as a Teacher’s Aide where she gained her passion for teaching and working with children.
Realizing she wanted to make a greater impact in the classroom she completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Coppin State University. Using that knowledge, Evelyn went on to teach in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools system retiring in 2004, after twenty-one years of service. During her summers, Evelyn worked as a Director for the City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks summer camps along with holding a part-time job with Air Cargo Transport.
During her spare time Evelyn enjoyed crafts, social events and music. She loved attending events around the Annapolis area when she could. She attended parades, cook outs and the summer music events. When her daughters were young, she would make clothing for her girls. She had great skills with a sewing needle. Making flower arrangements was another one of her great hobbies. She would volunteer to make wreaths and center pieces for friends and family. As a member of the Red Hat Ladies of Annapolis she enjoyed the gatherings at various locations wearing her red hat. Her favorite time of the year besides her birthday was her annual trip to the Hampton Jazz Festival. She would stay up all night packing her bags.
She leaves three daughters Kemberly (John), Karen (Afolabi) and Kina (Andrew). Five Grandchildren Cyra, Larry ( Sarah), Andreas, Briana and Markel. Six Great – Grandchildren Mya, Ronan, Andreas Jr, Noah, Isla and Camden. Four siblings Gomalie Jr, Connie, Gail and Charles. A devoted sister-in Law Allyson and many, many other loved relatives and friends.
