Eugene Davis' Obituary
CMSGT (RET) Eugene Davis (“Gene”), of Clinton, MD passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He was affectionately known as “Speedy” or “Chief” by his family and friends. He was born January 14, 1933 in Dillon, SC to Daniel Frank and Lillie Davis. In 1951 Gene joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Kansas, Texas, Turkey, Greece and the Philippine’s Island. He was proud to serve his country. In 1972 he was assigned to Andrews AFB, MD as Chief of Hospital Services at the Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center. During this time, he had the distinct honor of overseeing the arrival and subsequent care of the first 39 repatriated Prisoners of War to return home from Vietnam……an honor highlighted by a visit from the one and only Bob Hope! After 32 years, Gene was honorably discharged and he began his second career with the U.S. Airmen’s and Soldier’s Home in Washington, DC for the next 20 years. Gene loved life, and lived life to the fullest. During his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with friends at the Navy Rec Center in Solomon’s Island. He also enjoyed music, dancing, football and loved spending time with his family. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, known as “Pop Pop”, who loved to make everyone laugh with his witty sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sisters and sons Lloyd Dee Davis and Frederick Jennings Blankenbaker, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mary Alice (Draper) Davis, his children Steven Eugene Davis (Melina), Michael Joe Davis-Fabian, Lawrence Wayne Davis (Kimberly), Tina Diane Shotland, Michael Eugene Davis, Deborah Jeanne Pappas, Charles Ray Blankenbaker and George Curtis Blankenbaker, grandchildren Lauren Fusco, Alanna Fabian, Natalie Fabian, Rachel Fabian, Christina Michelle Bailey (Trenton), Ty Eugene Davis, Frederick Jennings Shotland (Shannon), Jessica Marie Shotland (Jordan), Travis Lee Shotland, Theodore Jennings Blankenbaker, Heather Leigh Thomas (Bryant), Brittany Nicole Pappas, Uwe Franz Pappas, Jr., Alexis Blankenbaker Poole, Samantha Blankenbaker and Bethanne Blankenbaker and many great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 12th at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 from 4 to 6 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Monday, February 13th at Trinity Episcopal Church, 14515 Church Street, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 at 10 a.m. Burial and Military Honors at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or Trinity Episcopal Church, PO Box 187, Upper Marlboro, MD 20773.
