Elroy Paul Waltzer's Obituary
Elroy Waltzer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, engineer, artist, and raconteur, passed away on June 5th,2026. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ethel Noonan. He leaves behind his loving wife, Carolyn, his daughters Leslie Mohr (husband John) and Carol Lilly (husband Rob), his son Kurt (wife Jody), his daughter in law Vicki (widow of his son Karl), twelve grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, with two more on the way. He is joining his beloved son Karl and grandson Sam, both of whom passed away too soon.
Elroy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1931to Elroy Emile Waltzer and Ethel Christine Ebling. He was the first in his family to attend college and graduated from Tulane University in Mechanical Engineering, while serving in the Air Force ROTC. There he met and married Carolyn Hodapp, in 1956.
After completing his service in the Air Force Strategic Air Command, with the rank of Captain, he moved to the private sector where he worked for the DuPont De Nemours company for 34 years before retiring. He and Carolyn began their family in Austin Texas, then moved to Orange, Texas, where they lived for 10 Years. Then they moved to Vienna, West Virginia where they lived for 47 years. They eventually moved to Annapolis Maryland to be close to family.
While working and raising a family, he continued his education and obtained bachelor's degrees from Marietta College. He achieved a degree in fine arts, based on his love for art and creativity, as well as one in economics based on his passion for business. After retirement he remained active as a consultant and served as an adjunct faculty member at West Virginia University Parkersburg and Wheeling Jesuit College. He actively gave time back to his community and society, serving as President and board member of the American Society of Training and Development, a board member of the Economic Roundtable of the Mid-Ohio Valley, was a member of the Service Core of Retired Executives, and was active in many other civil society and community educational efforts.
Elroy was physically active throughout his life. He started with boxing as a young man, became a water safety instructor for lifeguards, and loved tennis, running and skiing. He expressed his creativity through a prolific production of paintings, sketches, sculptures and cartoons. Elroy and Carolyn enjoyed dancing, started cooking and wine clubs with their friends, and remained active with lifelong learning programs.
There will be a private family memorial service later in the summer. It is recommended that any memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake or the BayWoods Scholarship Foundation of ACC.
