Ellen Stillwell Ward's Obituary
Ellen Louise Ward, age 93, passed away at her home in Annapolis, Maryland, surrounded by her family, on September 28, 2022. Ellen was born on November 20, 1928, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey; she was the only child of John and Ruth (Van Ness) Stillwell.
Ellen grew up in North Caldwell, New Jersey. After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, she followed in her mother’s footsteps by attending the Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in the Class of 1949 and worked as a nurse for over five decades. Ellen served at Mountainside Hospital, Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, and Daughter’s of Miriam Center for acute and long-term care. Earning a certificate in geriatrics, Ellen ended her career working at the Heritage Harbor Health Group, which served residents of the Heritage Harbor Community in Annapolis.
Ellen married Robert E. Ward on May 11, 1951. He predeceased her in March of 1978. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and went on tours of Ireland, Great Britain, and the Caribbean. The seaside was one of her most loved places. In 1994, Ellen moved from New Jersey to Maryland to be closer to her family.
Known for her courage and resolve, she will be missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Patricia Johann and her husband Thomas of Woodsboro, MD, son Peter Ward and his wife Darlene of Annapolis, MD; grandchildren, Sarah Shriner and her husband Shaun of Thurmont, MD, and Joseph Ward of Annapolis, MD; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Matthew, and Nathan Shriner. Ellen loved her extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends, who will miss her dearly.
