Edward Patrick Mansfield's Obituary
Edward Patrick Mansfield of Riva, Maryland passed away peacefully on September 24, 2023. He was born to Edward and Frieda Mansfield on October 29, 1947 in Warren, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Warren High School in 1965 and from Dyke College (Cleveland, Ohio) in 1970. Ed then married his high school sweetheart, Norma Johnson on April 17, 1971.
Ed began his career in advertising sales at the Cleveland Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1979, he became the Advertising Director of the Washingtonian Magazine in Washington, D.C.. There Ed had a hand in the substantial growth of the magazine. Ed was mentored by the Publisher, Philip Merrill, whom he revered. He, in turn, mentored many advertising salespeople who worked for him. To work for Ed was to know that shoes were to be shined and that “nothing happens until someone sells something.” Ed was a staunch supporter of and volunteer for the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind. In 1992, Ed was awarded the Cleveland/Miles Award from that organization in recognition of his service.
Together, he and Norma enjoyed entertaining, gathering with family and friends and sailing on the South River. They vacationed in Florida and “the islands,” especially St. Maarten. Whether working, traveling, or in retirement, every day to Ed was the “best day of my life”. Ed and Norma very much loved caring for their canine family; Watson and Maarti.
Ed leaves behind Norma, his wife of 52 years; his sister-in-law, Barbara Carter; niece, Britt (Ron) Roteman, nephews: Matthew (Cindy) Carter and Scott (Tammy) Head; many great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins: Doug Solock, Judy Meyer, Cindy Walker, Diane Callahan, Patty Winewriter, and Beverly Billiard; and lifelong friends: Gary and Becky Seymour. Ed was grateful for the friendship and care provided to him and Norma by Jenn Rossback and her family. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, John Carter.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ed’s ashes will be interred in Warren, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPCA of Anne Arundel County, Charter Senior Living of Annapolis Activities Fund (2717 Riva Road, Annapolis MD 21401) or The Philip Merrill Environmental Center (6 Hearndon Avenue, Annapolis MD 21403).
