Dr. William James Sweeney's Obituary
William J. Sweeney, M.D. (also affectionately known as Will, Doc or Pike) passed away, suddenly, on May 18, 2018. Bill was the beloved husband of Mary P. (Heath) Sweeney, loving father of Laura S. (Daniel) Ferrara, Nolan J. (Catherine) Sweeney, and Robert W. Sweeney; doting Boppa to Isabella Grace Sweeney. Bill was predeceased by his parents, John F. and Mary C. (Nolan) Sweeney. Cherished brother of Moira E. (Gabriel) Llabres, John F. Sweeney, Jr., and Brendan T. (Sheri) Sweeney. Much loved uncle to 14 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews. Beloved doctor to many.
After high school, Bill served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Wyoming at Laramie, where he met his mentor and friend, Dr. William Pancoe. Bill attributed Dr. Pancoe as the one who encouraged him to pursue a career in medicine. He completed medical school and his residency in obstetrics-gynecology at Creighton University. He was awarded a teaching fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill in maternal fetal medicine, and most recently practiced at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland.
Bill believed in living by the Golden Rule. He possessed the most generous, kind and giving spirit. He gave, without question, to anyone who needed it. His passing will leave a huge void to all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Lasting Tributes at 814 Bestgate Road from 10am-2pm and 4pm -7pm on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
