It is wonderful to read Margaret's shared memory of our beloved Girl Scout leader, Dottie. I was on that trip to National Center West with Margaret. Dottie demonstrated that women can explore the world with confidence, bike the entire C&O canal landing in Georgetown after a week of camping and camp in the middle of the winter at Assateague where the wind blew so hard, that the pot of water over the campstove could not be heated up! Dottie made a difference in my life. I went on to become a Girl Scout leader, camping with my "girls" and I continue to tent camp with a group of ladies to this day.=, all in in our 70's and 80's now. And I can still start a fire with one match (and appropriate tinder)! We were blessed to have Dottie in our lives during those high school years and in our hearts forever.

Dottie was my Girl Scout leader. We had so much fun. She gave me and my fellow Girl Scouts the chance to travel across country in her van. It was about eight of us. We stopped in many states and camped out. I remember going to Ohio, and many states as we crossed the United States. We ended up in Utah and swamped in the salt lakes. We visited the Mormon Tabernacle. In South and North Dakota we experienced eating buffalo burgers.we went to yellow stone park and saw the glacier. We had a great time. This experience was so amazing and Dottie was a very caring person. I met up again in my later years as the Annapolis Mall Walker. I told everyone at the mall that she was my Girl Scout leader. She left a memory in my heart that I will never forget. I always hugged her when ever I saw her. I met her niece and told her that she was my leader. Dottie sure will be missed. RIP Dottie!

I was fortunate enough to bird with Dotty on the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia and on Fisherman's Island before it closed, in the previous century. She and I were the only ones to brave the cold winds enough to watch the landing of the swallows at night in the marsh beside the oyster sheds in Oyster VA. She knew the sight would be worth enduring the cold, and indeed, it was. On Fisherman's Island, she taught me that we could ignore trying to identify all of the hundreds of Yellow-rumped Warblers, paying attention instead to their characteristic "thap". She will be missed, but fondly remembered.
