Dean H. Smiley's Obituary
Captain Dean Smiley, US Army Reserves (Ret), passed away 10 December, 2023 after a short and sudden bout with severe COVID-19 complications. His ex-wife, Ilse pre-deceased him in January 2007. They are survived by their three children, Patrick of Annapolis, MD; Mimi of Colonial Heights, VA; and Timothy of Midlothian, VA and one granddaughter, Sarah of Midlothian, VA.
Dean was born as the younger brother to Kenneth, Jr in New Bedford, MA in 1936 to Kenneth, Sr and Helen Smiley. His most memorable childhood years were lived in Woodstown, NJ where he played tennis and golf and learned the love of farming.
Dean graduated with a bachelor's in chemistry from Middlebury College in Vermont where he also developed a love for the mountains and snow sports. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering, Dean received his commission as a Lieutenant from the Army ROTC.
Dean served in the Army for a 2-year tour in New England, departing for DuPont, Inc., where he worked for more than 30 years. Life with DuPont took Dean from Delaware to Tennessee and Virginia. In Delaware, Dean became a father. In Tennessee, Dean returned to his roots tending a 20-acre family orchard, farm and pasture, becoming a father twice again. After retirement from the Richmond, VA DuPont facility, he started a small company called WeaverDean, where he combined mobile racquet stringing along with his lifelong love of tennis. In 2013, Dean moved to Annapolis, MD where he lived, loved, laughed and played until his death on 10 December, 2023.
