Dawn Blanchard's Obituary
Dawn Blanchard, born in Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on March 27, 2025, at the age of 72 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was the daughter of the late William and Leah Skane. She is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, George E. Blanchard; her daughter, Erin Blanchard Brown; Erin’s husband, James Brown; and their cherished grandchildren, Jackson and Emma. Dawn also leaves behind her younger brother, Daniel Skane of Mechanicsburg, PA.
Dawn’s childhood was marked by frequent relocations with her family, but she ultimately earned a degree in Special Education from Southern Connecticut University. Early in her career, she worked on the West Coast as a live-in advisor at a group home, helping teenagers transition to independent living. Missing her family, she returned to Baltimore and accepted a position at IBM, where she met George during a training class. They married two years later, and she spent 15 years at IBM before deciding to return to her true passion - education. Upon resigning, she famously declared, “It only takes a woman 15 years to do what it takes a man 30!”
Dawn and George later moved to Ithaca, New York, a place she humorously described as “the place that clouds went to die.” There, she dedicated herself to teaching special education students, bringing joy and warmth into her classroom. Her love for teaching was evident in the daily stories she shared with family - always told with a smile. As an avid reader, Dawn believed deeply in the power of literacy. At age 50, she returned to college full-time to earn her master’s degree in literacy, embracing the challenge with her characteristic determination. She went on to teach elementary school students with special needs, not only helping them learn to read but also inspiring them to love reading.
In 2019, Dawn was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As her condition progressed, ensuring the best possible care and being close to family became priorities. In 2020, she and George moved back to Maryland, settling in a home near their daughter and grandchildren. The proximity to family, combined with easy access to the shore and milder winters, provided comfort in her final years.
Dawn cherished every moment spent with loved ones. She found peace near the water and joy in the company of her grandchildren. She passed away at home, surrounded by family, just minutes from where her life began. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her love, laughter, and kind selfless nature will remain in the hearts of those she touched.
“We love you a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck.” You are missed.
