Cynthia Ballou Lerner's Obituary
Cynthia Ballou Lerner passed away on March 13 in Annapolis, Maryland. The former Solomons, Maryland resident was 77.
Born Cynthia Ann Chapin in Lyons, New York on April 20, 1939, she was the youngest of four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Chapin. Known affectionately as “Cindy,” she was raised on Dickerson Street in Lyons and graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Lyons Senior High School.
Cynthia went on to receive a BA in psychology from Oberlin College, and received her MSW degree from the University of Chicago. She practiced as a licensed clinical social worker for some forty years, giving her clients the benefit of her compassionate heart and commitment to helping others. Cynthia enjoyed sailing, reading mystery novels, and cooking meals with friends and family. She also loved to travel, in particular to annual get-togethers with some of her Oberlin classmates.
Cynthia is survived by her children, Jared and Katharine; her daughter-in-law, Leslie; and her grandson, Finn. Cynthia took great joy in being Finn’s “Nana.” She is also fondly remembered by her former husband, Charles Lerner; her sister-in-law, Joyce Chapin, the widow of her beloved brother, Dick; as well as her many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
The family will hold a private interment at the East Bloomfield Cemetery in East Bloomfield, New York where Cynthia will be laid to rest alongside many generations of her Adams and Chapin ancestors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Cynthia’s memory to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
