Claudette Verdella White's Obituary
Claudette Verdella White, affectionally known as “Clau,” was born on February 5, 1935, in Severna Park,
Maryland, to the late Amanda White and James Porter. She was the second of four children. A lifelong “Marylander,” Claudette attended school and later worked in Anne Arundel County. As a natural-born leader and helper, it made perfect sense for Claudette to pursue a career in nursing. That decision
proved to be her life’s calling. Claudette went on to serve as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), at the
Crownsville State Hospital Center for 27.5 years, until her retirement in 1992. Even after hanging up her nursing uniform, she continued to be a caregiver and volunteer throughout the rest of her life. Claudette truly enjoyed taking care of others. Helping people and serving her community gave her tremendous joy and purpose. She simply was not happy unless she was doing something for somebody.
Claudette lived life to the fullest. She loved to travel and participate in group activities such as bingo and bowling. She had a great laugh, and welcomed any opportunity to have a good time with her friends. If
not out on an adventure, she was perfectly content watching tv and enjoying Game Shows, Soap Operas,
Westerns, and WJZ (CH 13) for her daily news. Claudette was smart, sassy, strong, and fiercely independent. She did things her own way and DARED anyone to ever question her choices.
From a very young age, Claudette committed herself to a life of service. She LOVED God, and was a devoted member of Wayman Good Hope AME Church. You would often find Claudette volunteering,
attending Bible study, serving on a committee, hosting an event, and of course sitting in her favorite seat for Sunday morning service. In 2001, Claudette became a proud member of the illustrious Order of the Eastern Star, furthering her commitment to God, Church, and Community.
Claudette cherished time spent with family and friends. Everyone was welcomed at “Clau’s House.” On any day of the week, especially on a Sunday, you could drop in for some good food, good laughs, and a
lot of love. Claudette not only opened her home, she opened her heart. It was impossible to be around Claudette and not feel loved. When she greeted you with that Million Dollar smile, it made a bad day a good day. Claudette touched and impacted so many lives. She was truly a blessing to everyone she
encountered.
Claudette is survived by her only child, Joanne Blackwell (devoted son-in-love) Danny, granddaughters, Keena Stephenson (devoted grandson-in-love) Erik, Seneka Blackwell (wife) Courtney, and great-
grandsons, Aiden & Ashton Stephenson. Her beloved nieces, Maria & Izetta Wallace, Jan Staton (husband) Keith, and loving nephews, Craig Jackson and Isiah Wallace, Jr. She shared special friendships spanning over several decades with Lil Hayes, Irene Dorsey, and Doris Wallace. Claudette also shared a sweet ”sisterly” relationship with her cousin, Sylvia Nolan. Claudette was preceded in death by her
brother, Thomas, and her sisters, Gertrude (Sue), and Peggy. She will be greatly missed by a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors.
