Charles Jackson "Jack" Levis 's Obituary
Charles Jackson “Jack” Levis passed away January 1, 2018 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center surrounded by his beloved wife and family. Jack was born on January 16, 1925 in Wilmington, Delaware to Robert Carter Levis and Kathryn Jackson Levis and grew up in Newark, DE.
As Jack was beginning his freshman year at the University of Delaware in 1943 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps and flew on B-17s and B-29s. After serving three years in the military he returned to the University of Delaware where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and lettered in track. He graduated in 1950 with a mechanical engineering degree. He loved all kinds of sports and over the years he coached little league football, swimming, lacrosse and tennis.
After college Jack worked as a sales engineer and sales manager for Fischer and Porter until he retired in 1983. During those years he lived in Hatboro, PA, Buffalo NY, and Abington, PA. He retired to Bethany Beach, DE, Chestertown, MD, and Heritage Harbour, Annapolis, MD.
Over the years Jack was an avid supporter of the University of Delaware. He started an alumni association in Buffalo, NY, was president of the alumni association in Philadelphia, and served as president of the University of Delaware’s Alumni Association. He put in many hours of his time and travelled many miles serving on fund raising committees and a Presidential search committee. In 1986 he received the University’s Outstanding Alumni Award.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Anne Swain Levis, daughter Kathryn Elizabeth Levis, and son Lee Canon Levis. He is survived by his wife SallyLee Hunter Levis of Annapolis, MD, sons Charles Jackson Levis Jr. of Coatesville, PA, Scotton Swain Levis of Hatboro, PA, Linden Carter Levis of Virginia Beach, VA, and Mary Levis of Millville, DE, surviving wife of Lee Canon Levis. There are 19 surviving grandchildren and step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Two brothers, Robert Carter Levis III of Anaheim, CA, and Wilson Canon Levis of Germantown, MD also survive.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Crownsville, Maryland on Saturday Feb. 10, 2018 at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to The Lee Levis Scholarship Fund, Alumni Relations, University of Delaware, 83 East Main St. Third floor, Newark, DE 19716 or St. Paul’s Anglican Church, P.O Box 380, Crownsville, MD 21032.
