Bruce Blevins Jr.'s Obituary
Bruce Earl (Sonny) Blevins, Jr., 63, a resident of Shady Side, MD, died July 11, 2013, at Anne Arundel Medical Center after suffering a stroke while kayaking on Parrish Creek the evening of June 30th.
Bruce was born in the District of Columbia on June 30, 1950, and was raised in Prince George's County, where he graduated from Bladensburg High School. Growing up he spent his summers in the mountains of North Carolina and this is where he obtained his southern drawl. He is survived by his wife Sharon Blevins and granddaughter, Amber Blevins, of Shady Side, MD; daughter Dana Blevins (Mike Sost); grandsons: Chazz and Kenzy Sost of Churchton, MD; and a son, Bruce Blevins III of Wilmington, NC. Bruce was an extraordinary father and grandfather. He was also survived by his mother, Mildred Morene McKnight Blevins; and sister, Cindy Blevins of Glade Valley, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce Blevins, Sr.
Bruce worked for Anne Arundel County in the Facilities Management Division at the Arundel Center in Annapolis, MD. Bruce was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was an active member of Calvary Community Church. He was also an active member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in honor of his ancestors as well as a member of the Clan MacNaughton in honor of his Scottish heritage on the McKnight side of his maternal family.
Bruce led a band known as The Shady Side Sour Notes. Their music is beautiful gospel and bluegrass with a little bit of Celtic mixed in. They played at various nursing homes each Saturday. What a joy to all in attendance. Bruce also enjoyed kayaking, yoga, riding his bike as well as his motorized bikes. He also loved watching "Last of the Summer Wine" on PBS.
Bruce touched many lives in such a positive way. His kind, warm heart was a comfort to all who knew him. He always had a story to tell and could be quite entertaining. In the words of his Group Officer in the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, "Bruce was a good man, a loyal friend, a consummate gentleman, an unparalleled compatriot, and - above all - a faithful Christian."
Bruce will be missed by so many. We were very fortunate to have had such a wonderful man in our lives.
