Betty Cornelia Turner's Obituary
Betty Cornelia Turner peacefully gained her wings and entered eternal rest on June 21, 2023, while surrounded by her love ones. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend was 94 years old. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1929, and was the daughter and youngest born to the late James Reuben and Annie Lee (Taylor) Farrell.
Betty grew up in Pittsburgh and while visiting Maryland met the love of her life Melvin James Turner. On March 6th, 1954, Betty married Melvin and from this union three daughters were born Melvine, Cheryl, and Avis.
Betty was affectionally called “Tilley” by her daughters, “Grammy” by her grandchildren, “Gi Gi” by her great grandchildren. She loved her family, often telling them how much she loved them. Betty’s family, especially her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and sister.
Betty was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School System, graduating from Penn High School. She also attended the ITT Business Institute and successfully completed the Clerical Typewriting Course for which she was very proud.
Betty knew and loved the Lord. She touched many lives by spreading the Word of God and it was one of her greatest joys. She would often listen, pray for or with others. She started her spiritual journey when she received Christ and was baptized over 70 years ago. She was a faithful member who served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years at the First Baptist Church, Annapolis, Maryland. Subsequently, she joined and spent a few years as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Annapolis, Maryland. Then she was blessed to join the First Christian Church of Annapolis, Maryland where she continued her love for God until her passing.
Betty was a loyal and committed domestic worker for over 30 years and to the family of Colonel and Audrey English for over 20 of those years. She enjoyed family outings, especially going to different restaurants. She was an avid reader and really enjoyed reading the Bible. She looked forward to attending Church Service and special events. Watching Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were nightly TV viewing past times as well as those “good old wholesome family” shows Good Times, Leave It to Beaver, Golden Girls. She also loved music. Her favorite hymns were: My Hope is Built and Blessed Assurance. Her favorite gospel artists were Ce Ce Winans and Tasha Cobbs Leonard. Betty loved crab cakes, hot dogs, and fried chicken. She also loved Chocolate and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Hershey kisses and peppermints.
Betty’s husband Melvin preceded her in death on October 30, 1986. Betty was also preceded in death by James Farrell (Infant brother), Henrietta (Farrell) Hodges (sister), hosts of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, In-laws, other relatives, and friends, including special friends Adele Brown, Edna Edwards, Margaret Harris, Dewayne and Julia Rolfson.
