Barbara Snavely Layton's Obituary
Barbara Snavely Herron Layton, a longtime resident of Annapolis, quietly departed this life at the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Monday, March 27, 2017. Born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1928 to the late Dr. Robert C. Snavely and Constance E. Biser Snavely, Barbara lived in both Hagerstown and Fredrick, Maryland before moving to Annapolis at age 11. She graduated from Annapolis High School and Fleet’s Business School. During this time, she met and married her beloved husband Commander Auburn W. Herron, Jr., USN in 1946. This union was blessed with three children. Auburn preceded her in death on July 3, 1956. She was eternally heartbroken. Barbara was a Certified Medical Transcriptionist for 27 years at the Anne Arundel Hospital and then retired in 1997.
Barbara was an enthusiastic member of the International Club of Annapolis. She loved socializing and greatly enjoyed her volunteer devotions at the Annapolis Visitors Center and the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s unique consignment shop, the Clothes Box. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where for many years, she shared her love of flowers adorning the Alter for Sunday church services. Barbara was happiest spending her time outdoors walking the fields with her father, riding horses, helping and caring for all living things – people, animals, and plants, experiencing the ocean beaches throughout the United States and later in life, routinely bicycling the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia with friends. Her passion for Civil War history was marked by her book collection and her spirit of conversation. Barbara was also known as “Grandmom” to her granddaughters – Aimee and Adine – the treasures in her life. She was a very special lady and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her dearly loved brother, Robert (Bobby) C. Snavely, Jr.
Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Janet L. Herron of Annapolis, Steven M. Herron (wife Lynn) of Fripp Island, SC, Robynn Herron Eppley (husband Robert) of Carlisle, PA, and Lee Ann Layton Sonnier (husband Jerry) of Leesburg, FL; her grandchildren: Aimee M. Zimmerman of Harrisburg, PA, and Adine Herron Jordan (husband Lenny) of Sarasota, FL; her great-grandchildren: Ada and Tayla Jordan of Sarasota, FL; devoted family members: her cousin Sally Lee Schindel Cone (husband Alan) of Greensboro, NC, her sister-in-law’s Barbara A. Snavely of Annapolis and Virginia M. Herron of Goshen, IN; several devoted nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life will follow at a later date in Hagerstown, Maryland. Internment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, people can honor Barbara by making a memorial donation to the local charity she was most passionate about: the Anne Arundel County SPCA; aacspca.org
