Arthur E. Smith's Obituary
Arthur E. Smith, age 103, passed away January 12th at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis MD, after a brief illness. He was born in New York City to Arthur E. Smith and Jane (Lormer) Smith. Arthur was preceded in death by his wife, of 73 years, Irene (Dettman) Smith. He is survived by his three children: Robert L. Smith, Susan S. Potter and Barbara I. Smith, two grandchildren, Daniel Potter and Karen Munn, and two great-grandsons Benjamin Munn and Samuel Munn.
Arthur graduated from Lehigh University and then joined the army. He served during World War II mainly in France where he had the responsibility to convert a car manufacturing plant into a tank engine manufacturing plant. After the war he joined his family’s Ford dealership business, Smith and Gregory, in Bayside, NY. After leaving the dealership he worked until retirement as a plant engineer and then as a technical buyer for Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, CT.
Arthur’s family was an important part of his life. He and his wife raised their children in Manchester, CT. Bridge, Tennis and golf were lifelong passions for Arthur. He also loved to fix things and work on home improvement projects. He could often be found helping family and friends with building projects. After retiring Arthur and his wife, Irene spent many years as snow birds traveling to and from Orlando, FL. In 1998 they moved from Manchester to Annapolis, MD which became their full time home in 2008.
There will be no calling hours or service. A private service will be held at a later date.
