Arlie Ray Smith's Obituary
Arlie R. Smith passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 26, 2020. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his wife, Ingid G. Smith, of the home; one daughter, Connie L. Wink, and husband, Bill Wink, of Rockville, MD; two grandsons, Bradley Smith Nolet, Esq. and wife, Dr. (DDS) Michele Nolet of Rockville, MD, Joshua Michael Nolet, Esq. of Arlington, VA; granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Wink of Baltimore, MD and one sister, Lila R. Harris of Dallas, TX.
Arlie was preceded in death by his father, Henry R. Smith, on February 25, 2001, and his mother, Hazel D. (Hininger) Smith, May 9, 2000 of Dallas, TX, previously Gage, Oklahoma; and one brother, Howard Gene Smith, September 25, 1927.
He retired on October 1, 1972, as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Signal Corps, United States Army. During his service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service in Vietnam, and The Legion of Merit, First Oak Leaf Cluster, for his entire service. The Army Commendation Medal was awarded to him from May 1964 to May 1967, for meritorious service for his duties as an Instructor at Temple University, and The Army Commendation Medal, First Oak Leaf Cluster, was awarded by the Secretary of the Army for Meritorious Service at the Automatic Logistics Management Systems Agency in Saint Louis, MO, from July 1968 to August 1970. In addition, he was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal, with Three Battle Stars, for his service in Vietnam. He was a graduate of Oklahoma State University and subsequently graduated with a Masters and Doctorate degrees from North Carolina State University.
Arlie was an avid gardener, stamp collector and general collector, who served his country with pride and dedication.
He will be laid to rest with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
