Andrew Everett Canter, Sr.'s Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Andrew “Sonny” Everett Canter, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, on July 21st, 2026 in Annapolis, Maryland.
Andrew was born September 17, 1935 in Upper Marlboro, MD, son of the late Andrew Mitchell Canter and Mildred Mae Canter. He was raised on a farm alongside his late brother and two sisters. In May of 1958, he joined The United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he served in the transportation of heavy military vehicles. He returned to Maryland in May 1960, and shortly thereafter began dating Bonnie Jean Flack in 1961, later to marry in 1962. His experiences on the farm, in the Army, and throughout his lifelong partnership with Bonnie shaped his strong work ethic, determination, and resilience that would define his life.
With those qualities, Sonny built a life he was proud of alongside his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Canter. Together, they founded a glass company from the ground up. Through long days, late nights, challenges, and triumphs, they created not only a successful business but also a strong foundation of love, work ethic, and success for their family for generations.
Although known for his determination, he is equally remembered for his strong wit and joyful spirit. He brought a smile to everyone’s face, making light of every situation with jokes, playful expressions, and clever comebacks. No matter what the circumstance, he used this lighthearted personality to leave those around him smiling. Through it all, he was devoted to the well being, love, and unwavering support of his family.
Sonny found happiness surrounded by his spouse, sons, grandchildren, great grandchild, nephews, nieces, and friends. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of fishing with a Coors, watching Fox News from his favorite recliner chair, enjoying gin and tonics (with only a splash of tonic), and spending time with those he loved most. He made ordinary, quiet moments into unforgettable memories that will be cherished forever.
Sonny will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We will never forget his wisdom, his lighthearted jokes, and his endless stories of growing up on the farm, serving in the army, and building his business. And if you asked him how he is doing now, he would undoubtedly say “I’m doing alright - it’s the world that’s wrong”.
Sonny is survived by two sons, Andrew Canter Jr. and Matthew Canter; 3 grandchildren, Megan Chapman, Madison Canter, and Daniel Canter; and 1 great grandchild, Hayden Chapman, along with many other family and friends who will sadly miss him.
