Alice P. Welch's Obituary
Alice (Alma) P. Nevin Welch, 86, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the Waugh Chapel Care Center, Gambrills, Maryland. She was the wife of the late Richard L. Welch, Sr., the former Director of Security Policy Division of Naval Intelligence, whom she married in London, England in 1951. The couple were married for 56 years.
Born September 5, 1930 in Tipperary, Ireland, Alma was the daughter of the late Michael and Annie Nevin. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Catherine, Rita, Michael, and Patrick.
Alma's Parents were Irish patriots who fought in the struggle for Irish independence. She lived in London during World War II and survived the Nazi Blitz of the city by nightly seeking shelter with her siblings in the underground subway stations to avoid the bombardment.
After the war, Alma met and married her husband Richard who was serving in the US Navy. The young couple lived in Naples, Italy, from 1951-1961. Alma became fluent in Italian and as the wife of a naval officer she was active in both civic and church groups.
After her husband was assigned to work at the pentagon in 1961, they moved to the Washington, D.C. area. A woman of faith, Alma was an active member of Saint Pius X Parish in Bowie, Maryland for many years, where she was involved in both parish and school spiritual and social functions. Alma also served as president of the Altar Sodality, was a Girl Scout leader, and volunteered for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
In recent years she resided in Potomac, MD, Frederick, MD, Manhattan, NY, and finally in Crofton, Maryland.
Survivors include her children; Mary Bowers of Crofton, MD, Rev. Father Richard L. Welch, CSSR of New York, and Teresa Wiggins and husband Frederick of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Jason, Sean and Brian; a sister-in-law, Nancy Costa of Arizona.
The family would also like to thank the doctors and nurses at annarundal Medical Center and the staff and caregivers at Waugh Chapel Care Center for their kindness and loving care that Alice received from them.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 until 7 PM at the Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, Maryland (21401), where a prayer vigil will be offered at 6:00 PM.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:00 AM at St. John the Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 620 N Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD, with Father Richard L. Welch as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. John the Evangelist Church Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.
