My brother had a long and deep connection with boats and sailing. His first boat was a Sea Snark which he named the "Sloopy".
Alan and I had sailed the Sloopy out of the shelter of Oxen Inlet a down the Potomac. We explored a giant pile of sand probably dumped by a barge.
It was a sunny afternoon, Monday, Monday by the Mommas and the Pappas was #1 and playing incessantly on the radio as the weather turned bad.
After fruitlessly trying to tack back to Oxen Inlet, we put in to shore. The stench was unique and unforgettable: yes, we had discovered... Blue Plains Waste water plant.
A surprised worker let Alan make an SOS phone call to home. Dad showed up to pick us up. He was in a mixed mood, relieved we were safe and exasperated with the misadventure. (I suspect most parents feel this at some point).
Alan moved on to bigger and better boats, but the Sloopy and the adventure has a special place in my memory.
