I always enjoyed hanging out with ‘Steph & Chris’ … mostly because they were inseperable. It didn’t matter what we were doing … watching a movie, throwing the frisbee, cooking up a meal … they were my “Go To” people to go have fun, and hang out with. That’s because life can get a little lonely … when you decide to live out of a Dolphin Mini-Motorhome … while you attend CSUF college … and work weekends as a crazed Yellow Cab driver around Disneyland … in your late 30’s. Steph & Chris lived in Costa Mesa for awhile which is a stone’s throw from Newport Beach. Every once in awhile, I’d find time to hang out with Team Fun, and get away from school and work to take time to enjoy a sunset along Newport Beach pier, or have some famous Charlie’s Chili, or just watch a movie. When your life gets consumed with school and work … those random things you do for fun mean everything. Steph & Chris never let any dust settle on them. Later, Steph & Chris moved to Santa Ana, and moved into a historic house that reminded me of ‘The Munsters Haunted Mansion’. Huge house with a long backyard on nearly an acre of land. Team Fun became Team Remodel. My random visits of fun became random visits of work … and I didn’t even care. This was when I learned how meticulous Chris was with his work. He realized the value of his historic home, and he set out to remodel every room … to help his investment grow in value. I didn’t even care that my visits to the mansion went from doing Team Fun things to Team Help Chris With House & Yard Work. It didn’t even matter to me that I was literally doing labor for Chris … his zest for life was present no matter what he did … whether for fun or work … he enjoyed both!
Even though I hadn’t seen Chris in over two decades, some of those carefree memories of doing random things for fun with Chris are still memorable. Recently I was looking for a card to send Steph, and the words from one of the cards reminded me of how Chris has impressed so many people. I’m sharing this because like many others, I’m still shocked that I’m even writing this. I mourn for Steph, and will miss Chris, but I will always cherish our times together.
“A Journey Remembered”
“As some people journey through life,
They leave footprints wherever they go,
Footprints of kindness and love,
Courage and compassion, humor and inspiration,
Joy and faith, even when they are gone,
We can still look back and clearly see,
The trial they left behind,
A trail bright with hope that invites us to follow.”
George Dunn
