Why do our lives paths come across certain people? Nothing is accidental. Everyone brings a certain gift or lesson into our lives. Some stay... and others leave for a time only to resurface later in life. That was my friend , “Yorkie.” She was a messenger to me on so many levels. She called me out in my worst of times...and she was a glowing inspiration to help me live my best times...I am forever grateful and thankful for you, Yorkie❣️️And until we see each other again, “soar with the angels and saints”, and save me a seat at your table❤️✝️️🧚🏻♀️😘
When I became a dean I had the opportunity to get to know Marie and learned that she was a great teacher loved by her students and respects by her colleagues. But the opportunity to work more closely with her occurred during the planning of the new health building at the college. I learned that Marie was a broad thinker with innovative ideas and ability to “think out of the box”. It was indeed a pleasure working with her during that time. Our friendship continued after we both retired. What a pleasure it was to see Marie in her new life pursuing photography, deriving so much satisfaction, and being so happy and fulfilled. Her smile, sense of humor, bonhomie, and carrying will be greatly missed.
I was a professor in the Allied Health Dept at PGCC when Marie taught in the Resp Therapy program. She had a great sense of humor, and we shared many a funny moment at the college. I inherited her Bette Midler poster when she retired - she will always be the “Divine Miss M” to me.
I met Marie when I moved into the third floor front apartment at 309 PG Street in 1985. She lived right below me, and I remember the moment we met: I was having a housewarming, a somewhat raucous affair, and she had told our mutual friend Bobby that she would “drop by.” She did, and she stayed for a short time, and I thought, “Oh dear, she hates me.” It turned out, though, that she didn’t, and we became friends, and then when Bobby moved into the first floor apartment, we became a Friend Parfait.
Her creativity! Her sense of style! Her love of cars! Her generosity of spirit! Marie was a great friend. We took some swell trips together: New York to see Lily Tomlin, New York to see Bette Midler, Pennsylvania to see Fallingwater, let’s go, we’re up for anything. And when I found after I went away to graduate school that I could no longer give enough time to my dear dog Lucy, Marie took her in and had such a wonderful relationship with her that I was forever jealous, but glad for both of them.
For reasons more corny than I am truly comfortable with, Marie called me Laverne and I called her Shirley. My dear Shirl will be forever in my heart. Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!
Love always,
LaV
Sweet Marie, you will be missed. I send condolences to your family and dear friends who will miss your smile and big heart. I am sorry not to be able to attend your memorial service and will be there in spirit, remembering you during this time. -Kathe
It’s with great sadness that we learn about Marie’s death. We were one of Marie’s first students when she worked with Ted Wiberg at PGCC. She was such a beautiful soul who loved life and was dedicated to her profession. You will be missed and remembered.
