Thelma Irene Matthews

Thelma Irene Matthews (nee Jones) affectionately known as Sissie, was born to the late Andrew Jones and Eleanor Simms on May 21, 1934 in Annapolis, Md. Sissie attended Anne Arundel County Public Schools, graduating in 1954 from the former Wiley H. Bates High School. She furthered her education at the Fleet Business School. Thelma embarked on a career with the State of Maryland. Matthews, as she was known during her many years of employment at Crownsville State Hospital, retired from the institution in 1999. She enjoyed traveling, taking bus trips with Zastrow, the Annapolis Senior Center and Abroad. Sissie most enjoyed time spent with family. Shopping, dining out, attending local events, and of course the family cookouts. Sissie was there!! Thelma was predeceased by her parents; brothers: Robert Jacobs and Leon Jones; sister, Eula "Pee Wee" Whittington; and her former husband, Alfred E. Matthews, Sr. She leaves to mourn, her only son, Alfred E. Matthews, Jr. and wife Carlene; grandchildren: Alfred Matthews, Antoine Matthews and Keonia Farmer; great-grandchildren: Mikashia, Janae, Kaden, Amere and Aarynn; brothers: Howard Simms and wife Joyce, Bernard Simms and wife Jeanette; sister, Linda Simms Grady and husband Alexander; nephews: Aaron Spears and wife Mary-Ellen, Howard Simms; nieces: Wanda Scott, Valere Simms-Hutton; beloved niece, Dawn Simms; grandnephew, Julian Turner; special friend Jean Dorsey; and a host of other family members and friends. Thelma peacefully transitioned, in the comfort of the home she shared with niece Dawn, with her beloved sister Linda at her side, on August 14, 2021.
