Richard M. Walega, Sr.
October 29, 1934 - February 27, 2022
Richard Michael Walega Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 27th, 2022. He was 87 years old. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, Richard was one of 6 children. He and his wife Grace moved to Edgewater, MD in the early 2000’s. Richard loved sports, especially baseball, basketball, and football. Richard was a lifelong Orioles fan, spoke fondly of his time attending Baltimore Colts games with his high school friends and family, loved the Terps and quickly adopted the Ravens as his new hometown football team. Richard graduated from Southern High School in 1953. After high school, Richard played professional baseball with the minor league affiliates of the Reds, Tigers and Pirates. After baseball, Richard became a proud member of the Steamfitter’s union and worked most of his career with the Seagram’s Distillery. Richard was a devoted husband, father, and brother, who is survived by his wife, Grace, of 64 years, his daughter Dawn, son Richard, daughter-in-law Catherine, his two grandchildren Zoe and Carly, sisters, Phyllis, Connie and Cathy, brother, John, and many friends and family who will miss him dearly. Richard was predeceased by his father Peter, his mother Margaret, and his brother Donald. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 14, 2022, at 12:00 pm at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. For those who are unable to attend, services will be livestreamed on the Lasting Tributes website https://www.lastingtributesfuneralcare.com/obituaries/Richard-Walega-2/. Family and friends are invited from 1:30 to 3pm to join for food and fellowship concluding the memorial service at Lasting Tributes.
