Obituary for Michael Allen Greentree, Sr.

Michael A. Greentree, Sr., 75, of Annapolis, passed away on August 17, at his home in Heritage Harbor following a five month battle with cancer. He was born in Annapolis on June 23, 1943, to his late parents, Frederick H. Greentree, Sr., and Mary Margaret Lehmyre Greentree. He was preceded in death by older sisters Patricia Cook and Joanne Haworth, and brother Martin Greentree.

Mike grew up in the West Annapolis community, and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1961. He then attended Anne Arundel Community College. In 1962, he met Annapolis native Kathleen Pollock, and they married in 1963.

Mike joined the engineering/architectural firm of Dewberry and Davis in Fairfax, VA in 1964 as a draftsman, and was subsequently promoted to designer and planner. In 1975 at the newly opened Annapolis office, he created the Cartographic Division with a staff of six employees. He grew the staff to nineteen cartographers and photo technicians. In 1984, he became an Associate of the firm, and the Director of Cartographics at the Annapolis office, retiring in 1998. From 1990 to 2000, Mike and his wife Kathy owned and operated Greentree’s Ice Cream store on Main Street in Annapolis. He was also employed with Prudential Insurance Company from 1999 until 2008.

Mike was a boy scout leader with Troop 366 from 1971 to 1975. He served on the Boards of Directors of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and of the Annapolis Fine Arts Foundation, where he also volunteered for many years. He was a member of the Annapolis Environmental Commission, and a Board member of the Kunta Kinte - Alex Haley Foundation, where he worked with President Leonard Blackshear to establish the statue of Alex Haley, author of “Roots,” at the Annapolis City Dock in 1999.

Mike was a huge fan of University of Maryland basketball, and since childhood, an avid New York Yankees fan.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife, Kathy, his son Michael Greentree Jr with wife Susan Palmer Greentree and children Nicole and Michael III, and his daughter Kelli Greentree Hillmar with husband Brian Hillmar and son Mason. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Greentree, sister, Mary Margaret French, and extended family.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life gathering on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 2-4pm at the Admiral’s Reach Community Clubhouse, 601 Admiral Drive, Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
