April 16, 1973 - June 15, 2021
Melissa Lee Cox, of Harwood, Maryland, passed away on June 15, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer. She died peacefully under the watchful care of the good people at Anne Arundel Hospital Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgette Fleischmann Cox and her aunt Mickey Bailey. We take great comfort in knowing their reunion must have been sweet. Melissa is survived by her father, Larry Cox, step-mother, Lynda Cox, step-brother and sister, Megan Alvarez (Josh) and Aaron Cox, her indefatigably stalwart caregiver and companion, Cousin Gabrielle Capozzoli, her cousin Ryan Tuohy (Liz) her aunt Phyllis Schwinn and uncle Barry Schwinn as well as numerous other honored relatives and friends. Raised in Maryland, Germany and Pennsylvania, Melissa was an accomplished equestrian, target rifle shooter (having achieved the rank of Distinguished Rifleman) and knitter (winning numerous prizes in juried competition). Professionally, Melissa was an analyst, writer and editor. She attended Anne Arundel Community College and Johns Hopkins University, graduating from William and Mary College in Virginia in 1996. She served our country as a civilian working for TRW, Northrup Grumman and Booz-Allen-Hamilton as a government contractor in the U.S. and abroad. Melissa’s eclectic tastes spanned many topics. She loved literature, plays and music. She was expert in everything related to Arthurian legends, the sheep and wool trade, exotic cars and Formula 1 racing, gaming, fountain pens and crushing Jeopardy questions. She loved her dogs and cat. Her large circle of family and friends mourn her passing and will miss her towering intellect and quirky demeanor. In keeping with Melissa’s wishes, she will be laid to rest during a grave side service hosted by the Lasting Tributes funeral care located at 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, Maryland 21401, Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. Eastern Time. We invite anyone who would like to participate in this beautiful commemoration of her life to join with us for this green burial service. Because this is a green funeral, we respectfully request that no flowers be sent to the funeral home. During the most difficult of times in our lives, the small acts of kindness extended to us are the most memorable. Words can never adequately express what the care and professionalism of the medical teams at Mercy Hospital and Anne Arundel Medical Center have meant to our family. We were touched by how many of those professionals stopped to tell us how Melissa impacted their lives in positive ways as well. Anyone who knew Melissa knows her boundless love for animals and the down trodden. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, we invite any who feel moved to do so, to donate to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or to the oncology centers at either Mercy Medical Center or Anne Arundel Medical Center.
