John Francis Hickey IV

John Francis Hickey IV of Owings, MD died on July 15, 2012. He was 66. John was born in Washington, D.C. to the late John F. Hickey III and Elizabeth Thomas Hickey. He graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School, class of 1964. He was later drafted into the U.S. Army and was active during Vietnam. During his time serving our country he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged in 1969. Afterwards, he briefly attended University of Maryland, College Park and worked for the U.S. Department of State for 5 years. John worked as an Annapolis city mail carrier for 30 years. He was hardworking and enjoyed interacting with everyone on his route. He greeted everyone with a smile and a joke and was an encyclopedia of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He had a love of mystery books, Bluegrass music, baseball (Washington Nationals) and travel. He visited 47 states and several countries and was especially fond of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was married to Rebecca Gayle Kackley Hickey and resided in Owings, MD. In addition to his wife, Rebecca, he is survived by two children, Megan Gayle Hickey of Silver Spring, MD and John “Jonathan” Francis Hickey V of Owings, MD; and three siblings, Arthur Hickey, Mary Hickey Metzker and William “Bill” Hickey. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation or National Forest Foundation. A remembrance tribute will be held between 2 and 4 pm on July 29, 2012 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, P.A. 814 Bestgate Rd. Annapolis, MD 21401.
