Dr. Albert E. Altongy
September 20, 1939 - November 15, 2021
Dr. Albert E. Altongy, 82, of Palm City, FL and Annapolis, MD, formerly of New Hartford, NY, died peacefully on November 15, 2021 at his home in Annapolis, MD. Al was born in Utica, NY on September 20, 1939 to Philippine (Boustany) and Jalil Altongy. The youngest of four children, Al attended St. Francis de Sales High School, where he was the photographer for the school newspaper. After completing his predental studies at Utica College, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force for two years in Istanbul, Turkey, sparking his lifelong interest in international travel. Al then returned to Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he received his Master of Science in Dentistry with a specialty in orthodontics. In 1967, he married his wife of 54 years, Anne Pyne, and returned to the Utica area. He established a thriving orthodontics practice, perfecting smiles and serving the community for over 30 years. Over the course of his career, Al served as the President of both the New York State Society of Orthodontists and the Oneida-Herkimer County Dental Society. He was a member of the American Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association and the Pierre Fouchard Society, an honorary dental society. Al was a Clinical Advisor to the Research Department of Lee Pharmaceuticals and the Orthodontic Adviser to the cleft palate clinic at Faxton Hospital. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Utica Zoological Society and of BlueCross BlueShield of Utica-Watertown, Inc. and was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Al’s scientific mind and inquisitive nature supported his many career accomplishments, but his greatest source of pride was his family. He was a beloved husband and father, a devout Catholic, an avid sailor, a Bridge enthusiast and a frustrated golfer. Al also enjoyed tinkering in his workshop, where he made everything from shelves to an outdoor gazebo to toys for his daughters. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Al is survived by his wife Anne (Pyne) Altongy and daughters Patrice (husband Blake Haider and grandchildren Pierce, Blake, Jr. and Alden) and Alissa Parisi (husband Gregory and grandchildren Elena, Bennett and Corinne). He is predeceased by his daughter Kristen, his parents Philippine and Jalil Altongy, sisters Margaret Millet and Laurice Bonin and brother Joseph.
