Susan worked at least one summer as a naturalist for the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden in Annapolis developing and conducting nature programs for preschoolers. She was always very upbeat and smiling, once I asked her if she got headaches because her hair was pulled back so tight, she just laughed. The small garden staff of three enjoyed her stories about the battle field at Gettysburg and her family in Pennsylvania. We had several garden staff picnics and Susan always brought chocolate mint brownies that she made herself (umm) she gave us each the recipe and I've been making them for years ever since.

My deepest condolences to the family. Ms. Hottle-Schultz was an inspiration to me while a student at St. Mary’s High School. She instilled the importance of history and geography to not only better understand the world, but understand ourselves. My fondest memories were building a colonial house for MD history, and enjoying many laughs during Intro to Geography. She shared her passion with us by engaging our learning in fun and creative ways: telling us stories, watching movies and asking us thought provoking questions. Unknowingly, she inspired me to study geography in college and I later became a teacher. She will be greatly missed and I hope that I may continue her legacy of inspiring students to be global thinkers the way she inspired me.

I am a fellow dog lover and met Susan and Fred walking our dogs. I always admired the couple walking their dogs together and that they had opened their hearts to a special needs 3 legged fur baby. I admired that and the stories of the trips with the dogs. It was a sad day when she was and they were no longer able to walk the dogs together. Sweet Susan you had a tough go girl. I know that you a surrounded by the love of your family, friends and pets that passed before you. I pray that your heart broken Fred and Ripple feel your presence and are able to find peace knowing that you are at peace and no longer suffering. Much Love, your friend and neighbor, Sharon

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I wanted to offer you my sincerest condolences for your loss. I will never forget all the fun times that I had in eighth grade with Ms. Susan as my teacher. She was so kind, caring and supportive to my very introverted younger self. She made such a difference in my life and I will hold her memory deeply in my heart.
