Obituary for Friedrich Ross Crupe

FRIEDRICH R. CRUPE, 80, of Davidsonville, Maryland, peacefully passed away on June 12, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 4, 1938, to Lester and Gladys Crupe, and grew up in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his loving wife, Christiane Waldkirch Crupe, who he adoringly called “Egghead,” and his brother and sister-in-law, Denver and Maria Crupe, of Orlando, Florida.

Fred graduated, cum laude, from Washington and Jefferson College (W&J) in 1959 and received his master's degree from American University in 1970.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1965 and was honorably discharged as a Captain. After his military career, Fred became an international trade analyst, serving in various key leadership and negotiator roles in the U.S. Department of Commerce. He retired in 1995 as the Director of the Office of Exporting Trade Company Affairs.

Understanding the importance of training the next generation, Fred established annual outstanding achievement awards and summer internships for both the US Naval Academy (USNA) and W&J economics students and served as an advisor to Georgetown University AIESEC students. Further, for 19 years following his retirement, he was a substitute teacher at St Mary’s High School in Annapolis and Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland, where he was able to positively impact even more young lives with his wisdom, patriotism and humor.

For those who knew him, however, Fred’s proudest achievement was his decision to become a Naval Academy sponsor. Fully embracing this role, he and his wife built what would turn out to be lifelong relationships with dozens of Midshipmen during their tenure as sponsors from 1982 to 1994. A gifted mentor, Fred’s commitment to, and unwavering encouragement for, every Midshipman he met will be forever considered his strongest legacy.

A Celebration of Life remembering Fred will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 3-6 p.m. in the Clubhouse at Harbor Hills in Davidsonville, Maryland. His final resting place will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
