Obituary for Betty Ann "Liz" Bell

Betty Ann "Liz" Bell, of Millville, DE and formerly of Gambrills and Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 19, just three days shy of her 87th birthday. She was born on July 22, 1931 in Andalusia, AL, to Grady and Carrie Lord. She grew up on a farm, the middle child among four sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Jay High School, Jay, FL, in 1949 and moved to Pensacola to work as a telephone operator. Liz met the love of her life during a blind date on Pensacola Beach one sunny day in 1952, and they were married nine months later. His name was Clyde L. “Larry” Bell, Jr.

Larry was released from Naval service in 1953 and they returned to his home state of Maryland. While Larry was attending medical school, Liz worked at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC. Once Larry’s medical training was complete, including a two-year residency in Youngstown, OH, they returned to Maryland and Larry opened his General Practice in Bowie. Liz could be found side-by-side, working in the office with him, running the show! Many fun-filled family gatherings and fantastic vacations followed, and they resided in Bowie until 1977 when Larry became an Anesthesiologist. Once they moved to Annapolis, a long career for Larry ensued at Anne Arundel Medical Center, with Liz becoming a volunteer, known as a Pink Lady. They were members of St. Ann’s Episcopal church in Annapolis and The Annapolis Yacht Club.

Liz loved to read and always had a book in her hand or by her side. She loved all sports, but especially the game of golf, either playing or watching and she loved the Skins and the O’s, even when they had terrible seasons!! She and Larry were able to travel extensively after his retirement in their motor coaches or traveling with friends to Europe. Both Liz and Larry loved the Casinos. She could sit and play the penny slots for hours and was a mean poker player.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Larry, her infant son, Peter Barrington Bell, and her grandson, Charles Joseph “C.J.” DiNenna, III. She was also predeceased by two of her sisters, Margie Bray and Becky Greer, and by her brother, Wayne Lord. She leaves to mourn her passing son Clyde Laurance “Larry” Bell, III and wife Judy of Churchton, MD, daughter Anne Barrington Raup and husband Bill, with whom she resided in Millville, DE, daughter Jayne Bell Hartsell and husband Perry of Southaven, MS, and daughter Lisa Barrington Bell of Pasadena, MD. She also leaves her grandchildren Meghan White Tieff of Severna Park, MD, Peter Barrington Bell and wife Cybil of Crofton, MD, Philip Laurance DiNenna and wife Jennifer of Shady Side, MD, Joshua Karl Raup of Gambrills, MD, Molly Lord Elton of Pasadena, MD, and Austen Whitworth Hartsell, Brooks Barrington Hartsell and Caroline Irene Hartsell, all of Southaven, MS. Liz also leaves ten great grandchildren.

Liz is also survived by her brother James Lord and sisters Midge Childers and Bobbie Smith of northwestern Florida and brother Farrell Lord of Buford, GA.

A celebration of Liz’s life will be held Saturday, August 4 at 11 a.m. at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis MD. A luncheon reception will follow the service from 12-2. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Liz’s name to the American Red Cross, www.redcross.org.

Liz loved purple and had recently had all of the walls and ceilings in her living area painted many different shades of purple. So please if you can, wear a shade of purple for her service. It was her favorite color!!
